FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE LIMITATIONS OF DAILY LIVING ACTIVITIES IN PATIENTS WITH LEPROSY:
A cross-sectional study

Introduction: Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium Leprae, which has an affinity for nerve cells and causes changes in sensitivity and incapacity in performing activities of daily living. Objective: To analyze the factors that influence the limitations of activities of daily living in patients with leprosy. Materials and methods: Analytical, cross-sectional research, with 60 participants with a clinical diagnosis of leprosy, over 18 years old, of both sexes, who were undergoing treatment at a reference Health Center in São Luis-Ma. For data collection, the Sociodemographic and Clinical form, the SALSA (Screening of Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness) Scale, and the Simplified Neurological Assessment scale were used. Results: There was a predominance of male patients (55%), with the age range of 41 to 50 years (26.67%). According to the SALSA Scale, 65% of the participants did not present limitations in daily activities, and 60% presented a zero risk awareness score. Regarding the factors associated with daily limitations, a significant association was observed with age, EHF score (Eyes, Hands and Feet), and general disability, specifically in the hands and right foot. A strong and positive correlation was also observed between limitations and risk awareness in response to the degree of physical disability. Conclusion: The limitation of activities of daily living of the patients studied was associated with the degree of physical disability and age, indicating the need to prevent disabilities in these patients through early diagnosis, especially in older individuals.
